When to See a Wound Care Specialist (And When Not to Wait)
If you have a wound that isn’t healing, it’s easy to assume it just “needs more time.” But some wounds need specialized care early to prevent infection, complications, and longer healing times.
At Broward Wound Care Specialist, we treat hard-to-heal wounds with personalized plans and advanced assessment tools—so you can get answers and a clear path forward.
When you should see a wound care specialist
Consider scheduling an evaluation if any of the following are true:
- Your wound hasn’t improved in 2 weeks
Many wounds should show noticeable improvement within 10–14 days. If it looks the same (or worse), it’s time to get it checked. - You have diabetes or poor circulation
Diabetes and vascular issues can reduce blood flow and sensation, making wounds harder to heal and easier to ignore until they become serious. - The wound is getting larger, deeper, or more painful
Worsening symptoms can be a sign the wound is not healing properly or has developed complications. - There are signs of infection
Watch for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, odor, or fever. Infection can spread quickly and should be evaluated urgently. - You’ve had a recent surgery and the incision isn’t healing well
Post-surgical wounds are one of the most common reasons patients come to us. Early treatment can prevent setbacks. - You’ve had repeated “open and close” cycles
If a wound seems to heal and then reopens, there may be an underlying issue (pressure, circulation, blood sugar control, or infection) that needs targeted treatment.
When not to wait (seek care urgently)
Don’t delay evaluation if you notice:
- Fever or chills
- Rapidly spreading redness
- Black or gray tissue
- Severe swelling or increasing drainage
- New numbness or color changes in the foot/toes
What a specialist visit typically includes
A wound care visit usually involves:
- A detailed wound assessment (size, depth, tissue type, drainage)
- Circulation/vascular evaluation when needed
- A personalized treatment plan (dressings, offloading, debridement if appropriate)
- Home-care guidance and follow-up scheduling
The goal: heal faster and reduce complications
The earlier we identify what’s slowing healing, the sooner we can correct it—often preventing infection, hospitalization, or long-term issues.
